Background

Amnesty International (AI) is a global movement of 2.2. million people in more than 150 countries and territories human rights who campaign for internationally recognized human rights to be respected and protected. AI is independent, non- partisan and funded mainly by its membership and public donations. AI started working in South Africa around the 1960th.   

Amnesty International South Africa (AISA) is one of the sectors of   AI. It was established in 1990 with the setting up of the first AISA Group in Port Elizabeth and later in Durban and Pietermaritzburg. In 1993 the National Coordinating Committee was established, and in 1995 the first Annual General Meeting was held in Grahamstown. 

AISA has individual & group membership, supporters, partnerships and networks in communities, universities, schools and institutions across the country.
