WOMEN’S MONTH EVENT

On 28 August 2010, a women’s month event was held at Central Johannesburg College in Alexandra. The event was a collaborative effort between AI South Africa and Agisanang Domestic Abuse Prevention Programme (ADAPT).

The purpose of the event was to showcase a theatre production by ADAPT’s Young Women’s Movement which highlighted human rights abuses faced by the majority of women in South Africa. These include ’dating, violence and power relations between boys and girls in schools and in the community; the role of parents in socializing children, especially boy children, toward traditional gender role; socio-economic drivers (unemployment, limited access to education and health services) and how they impact on relationships between men and women.’

The theatre production was complimented by a recital of David wa Maahlamela’s poem,’I AM THAT WOMAN’ and a moving rendition by POET PURE aka Kgetsa. The audience of approximately 125 received an address by Bafana Khumalo of Sonke Gender Justice Network on the role of men in achieving gender equality. The section director, Nokuthula Magudulela, introduced the Demand Dignity Campaign and she gave interviews to community-based media on the event. Alexandra Community Newspaper published a flattering article on the event in its early September edition.

Key outcomes for this activity include increased visibility of Amnesty International within community and amongst partners; increased understanding of women’s rights as human rights and a basic understanding of role of human rights in the MDGs (Demand Dignity Campaign)
