Much like the JBF, the NGO Fair is an annual event that is organized by Khanya College. Now in its 2nd year, it was held at the Museum Africa in Newtown (Johannesburg) on 4 August 2010.
The purpose of the NGO fair is to create a platform for civil society organisations and donors to engage, debate and discuss issues relevant to their work and the communities they serve. These platforms include the fair itself, round-table discussions, one-on-one interviews with various stakeholders, workshops, book launches, viewing corners, exhibitions, and screenings.
AI South Africa engaged more than 25 NGOs at the fair including the organisers of the event – Khanya College and other organisations working with working class communities such as Soweto Electricity Crisis Committee, Benchmarks and Nkunzi Development Association.
In addition to generating an income of R1,650.00 from the sale of AI branded material (including T-shirts’, pin badges, sticker and posters) our stall attracted the attention of an online journalist who interviewed the HRE Officer about Amnesty’s work in South Africa. An important learning from this activity was there was great willingness from individuals to sign up to become supporters of AI South Africa provided this was at no cost and that there would be opportunities to contribute to campaign actions such as letter writing or petitioning. This information was shared with the section director who recommended that upon the approval of AI members, a category of supporters be created for AI South Africa.
