Jozi Book Fair (JBF) is an independent book fair that is hosted by Khanya College on an annual basis. The overall purpose of JBF is to promote a culture of reading and writing, and to provide a public and visible platform where social partners can come together.
At the 2010 Book Fair over 57 stalls were provided for writers and small publishers. More than 3,000 readers and activists attended the fair between 7 and 8 September 2010.
AI South Africa attracted 35 visitors to its stall including representatives from the Socio-Economic Rights Institute (SERI), Freedom of Expression Institute (FXI) and AIDS Consortium. While there was great interest in the work of Amnesty in South Africa, there were barriers to recruiting new members. The most commonly cited reasons were an inability and /or unwillingness to pay a membership fee due to what was viewed as a high charge for individual membership.
As a result of attending the JBF, AI South Africa benefited from requests to do collaborative work with the Global Call to action against Poverty (GCAP), CIVICUS and AIDS Consortium. Subsequently, a joint workshop on the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) was implemented together with GCAP and Black Sash in mid-September 2010. Amnesty International supported a CIVICUS action to improve underprivileged communities’ access to the Tri-Continental Film Festival on Human Rights during October 2010. Plans for long-term collaboration with all of the aforementioned partners are underway.
