Overall purpose of job: This is a key position within AI South Africa (AISA), as one of the middle management team. The Campaigns Coordinator (CC) will be responsible for taking the lead on all of AISA’s campaigning activities and for mobilizing the membership. He/she will also be responsible for line managing interns and volunteers.
Financial responsibilities: The CC is responsible in collaboration with the Section Director for developing the section’s budget for campaigning and activism activities and for reporting to the Board/Working Group and Section Director as required.
Key Responsibilities:
- To plan, coordinate, report and evaluate the section’s campaigning activities on specific human rights issues within South Africa and around the world
- To work closely with the Membership Growth Officer and other colleagues to mobilize AISA members, the community and other partners to take action on these issues
- To coordinate online and offline actions and to organise campaigning events as appropriate
- To build effective working relationships and to maintain regular contact with AISA groups and members engaged in campaigning activities
- To build AISA members’ campaigning capacity through training and support
- To encourage and facilitate the exchange of innovative and creative campaigning ideas among AISA membership
- To network effectively with other human rights NGOs and coalitions within South Africa so as to ensure synergy
- To develop partnerships and strategic coalitions with other civil society organisations, including community based organisations, to campaign on shared objectives
- To review, prioritise and adapt campaigning materials produced by the International Secretariat, and to ensure their appropriate distribution
- To keep informed of international current affairs and domestic political, social and economic developments as these inform AISA’s campaigning activities
- To write clear, concise reports for the Section Director, Board/Working Group, International Secretariat, funders and other partners, as necessary
- To represent AISA to the media in respect of key campaign issues, as requested by the Section Director
- To effectively line manage interns and volunteers
- To develop and manage the section’s budget for campaign activities
- Be prepared to perform any other duties delegated by the Director
- To travel extensively within South Africa and to attend national and international meetings, conferences and training workshops, as the opportunities arise
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
Essential Attributes
- A three year Degree or equivalent in a relevant field
- At least three years’ experience of strategic campaigning
- Understanding of human rights issues
- A proven track record of coordinating and organising successful campaign activities online and offline
- Ability to motivate and inspire others towards activism for change, including through creative and dynamic approaches
- Ability to represent AI effectively and form partnerships and coalitions with other civil society organisations
- Experience of providing campaign training to others and ability to plan, facilitate and evaluate training
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to human rights.
- Ability to manage a demanding workload, meeting deadlines and adjusting priorities as required
- Ability to understand and express ideas and information in English in a fluent, clear and concise way, both orally and in writing
- Ability to communicate in other South African and or African languages
- Ability to institutionally represent the organization in a professional manner in a variety of contexts
- Experience of designing and implementing fundraising activities, including the writing of successful project proposals
- Ability to develop and manage a budget of up to R500 000
- A high level of computer literacy, including at least Microsoft Word and Excel, PowerPoint, Internet
The following will be an added advantage:
- Experience of working as part of a team, and understanding of the importance of good communication for the coordination and effective functioning of teams
- Knowledge of uploading and managing web databases, use of mobile technology, social media, social networks and on-line communication (Facebook, Flicker, Twitter, etc.)
- Driver’s license and preferably own vehicle
- Willingness to travel, possibly at short notice (national including rural areas and international)
